STEF CONNER'S IMAGINARY SONG HUNT!

Old words with new music

(+ old words with old music... + old words with new music pretending to be old!)

Join me on Zoom, every other Wednesday, to rummage through music history’s weird, wonderful, mystical, and neglected corners, where we’ll find enchanting song-treasure!

🕯🔮

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO 'HUNT IMAGINARY SONGS'?

In these fortnightly Zoom sessions, you and your fellow hunters will discover a wealth of historical and heritage songs, through listening, singing, and conversation. You’ll encounter musical stories handed down generations, mystical incantations, strange notations, beautiful manuscripts, ancient instruments, tragic ballads, songs for forgotten saints, tavern tunes, musical riddles, heartrending laments, creepy curses, and off-the-beaten-track modern songs with ancient or folk twists… and more! 🤯 I've called it an Imaginary Song Hunt, because most of the music we'll encounter is reimagined from patchy and difficult-to-interpret historical evidence, inherited tradition, and folklore; there's often no way to know for sure how old songs would have sounded... but it's great fun to make an educated guess! In these sessions, we'll explore ways of guessing that are informed by evidence, but still leave space for the imagination to soar! This is for you if you love any or all of: singing, folksong, history, stories, ancient magic, ritual, artistic experimentation, and using your imagination!

How do we song-hunt?

Participate (or spectate) in any way you like: listen and learn, ask questions, sing along, harmonize, and even use the materials to reimagine your own ancient songs! You can take historical inspiration from these sessions to enrich your own music-making. You don’t need any musical training to enjoy this… but there will be plenty to keep hardcore music geeks busy too! The sessions run every other Wednesday, 18:00–18:45 GMT, from 17 Jan to 31 Jul.

Is there any commitment involved?

No! All you have to do is sign up to register your interest. Really, that’s it. You don’t have to commit to attending every session. Just come whenever you have the time. When you join the hunt, you’ll receive the recurring Zoom link and passcode, details of the up-coming schedule, reminder emails, clues about the songs we’ll uncover, and links to access exclusive resources.

What does it cost to participate?

Nothing. No, really! This truly costs nothing to join. I may occasionally rattle a song-hunt tip jar, where you can throw a shilling or two when you’re feeling flush and appreciative… but expect that to be low-key, anonymous, and 100% optional! I’ll mainly give away free stuff (scores, words, info packs, exclusive unreleased songs and videos)… because I’m a big-hearted hostess and I want to preside over a bustling mead hall! 😉🍻 Wes þu hal!

“songs of romance, eros, lullaby calm, insults, come-ons and darkness… probably unlike anything you’ve heard before…”
